Hardware Environment

Sep 13, 2010

Here's a question I am asked occasionally- "What type of hardware do you use to run our websites?"

Okay, so I am asked this question very rarely.  But still, people want to know!  So here it is:

UC ANR Web Hosting Environment

Web Server: 2 quad-core hyper-threaded processors.  12 GB RAM.  Windows 2008 R2 64 bit.

Storage: Dell MD3000 storage area network with 6TB installed, 30TB capacity

Database: SQL Server 2008 running on 2 quad core processors, 10 GB RAM

Backup: Backup system to hard-drives.  Web server backup daily, database backed up hourly.

Redundancy: Redundant server environment housed in separate building on campus.  Entire webserver, database and storage environment copied over daily.  20 minute changeover.

Bandwidth: Two 1Gbps connections to UC Davis campus

Security: Servers stored in locked room.  Dual (failover) Cisco 5520 hardware firewalls configured with intrusion protection and VPN.  Additional Juniper firewall protecting ecommerce system.

Battery Backup: APC UPS systems on all hardware.

I hope to keep you updated with lots of information in the future.
